Natural Health, Issue #018 -- How to Stop Sugar Cravings
June 25, 2012
Hello,

Sugar Withdrawal

What do you do to stop sugar cravings? That was a question asked on "Everyday Health's" Face book page. A very popular page and website.

The answers revealed a lot. Most people admitted that they succumbed to their sweet cravings, or some said that they would eat fruit. Not the best way to help sugar addiction but not surprising that so many struggle with sugar withdrawal. The truth about sugar is that it is very addicting. "Refined sugars attach to the same receptors as narcotics, valium, endorphins and alcohol." Dr. Hugo Rodier M.D.

Cravings indicate a nutritional imbalance or lack. And in the case of sugar it is often protein. So for those who crave sweets, there are

Three things to do to help stop sugar cravings:

1. Eat more protein

It is important to eat more protein especially at breakfast.

This is the key that few people know! If you have a real sweet tooth and signs of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia, then ensure that you get adequate protein at every meal. In general, women need 45 grams of protein per day, men need 55. Two eggs for breakfast are ideal. When the yolk is runny, as with soft boiled or poached eggs, there is a negligible effect on cholesterol. Protein snacks in between meals will help, and eat complete, full protein at all three meals.

2. Drink more water

I attended a conference last year about the benefits of drinking more water. I had always considered that I drank a lot of water, but after the conference I increased my intake especially first thing in the morning. It worked, my sweet cravings were reduced.

3. Reduce sweets.

I know, you don't want to hear this, but sugar is addictive so it is imperative to reduce sweets in order to stop sugar cravings. This includes fruit. Yes fruit is nutritious and healthy. But for people who are sensitive to sugar, eating fruits triggers more sweet cravings, so you would do best to reduce the amount of fruit you eat until your sugar cravings are under control.

You are sweet enough as you are : )
